Have you been using Squarespace to create your new website?
Well, definitely this is a good choice, especially if you think about the templates and customizations that you can use.
But with time you will certainly realize that you need a lot more features than this platform has to offer.
There are quite a lot of limitations that you need to think about and may be you will have to move from Squarespace platform to WordPress.
Whether you need to add Google analytics, or wish to add some third party script, you won’t be able to do it on the Squarespace platform.
Apart from that, building a professional e-commerce site on Squarespace is not the right option due to its feature limitations and when you add to the fact that there are limited designs available to choose from, you will certainly wish to move on from this platform.
If you compare all these problems with WordPress, you will see that, WordPress is really flexible, lets you add different codes, scripts, plug-ins, etc. for your benefit and you can get a lot more options or templates to choose from.
So, in case you are facing all these problems with your Squarespace site and wish to move your site to WordPress, you need to know how you can do it.
First thing, you need a domain name and a hosting. Unless you have a hosting, you won’t be able to run WordPress websites.
In case you already own a domain name, you will need to transfer that domain name to the web host site that you wish to use.
Once you have a hosting account, now you need to install WordPress.
In case you are new to this, you can follow step by step guide for the particular web host and most likely you will be able to get it installed with just a single click.
Once installed, you will have your WordPress dashboard ready.
Export content from Squarespace
Now that you are ready with your WordPress, it is time that you start exporting your content from the old site.
To do so you can use the export functionality provided by Squarespace, but it’s really limited so, you won’t be able to get all the data that you need.
Most of them you will have to copy and paste on your WordPress website.
While exporting, remember that only basic pages, one of your blog pages, all your blog posts, your gallery pages, images and texts will be exported to the WordPress site.
But albums, event or product pages, etc. won’t be exported. None of the products, videos, or audios will be exported.
To export, you will have to logon to your Squarespace account and go to “Import/Export” menu under “Settings”.
You will be able to export your data in a suitable format that will be easily imported to WordPress site.
In case you have products data, then the best option will be to download in a .csv file.
Download the exported file from server and you are done.
Import Content to WordPress
Now that you have exported your data it’s time to upload it to your fresh website.
You need to logon to your WordPress dashboard and go to “Import” page. Install the correct importer to import your WordPress compatible xml file.
Once installed, it will run automatically. It will allow you to choose the file you need to upload to import the data.
Remember to choose the correct exported data file. WordPress will check whether everything is in perfect format before uploading the file.
Once uploaded, you will get the import settings to work with. The first step will be to choose author name for all the content that you imported.
With WordPress you can even import your Squarespace users as well and those names will be added as subscribers on your new website.
Once you are done with setting up the import page, click on “Submit”. After importing the content, you can review them on WordPress posts and pages.
Import your images
The problem with WordPress importer is that you won’t be able to import the images from your old website on Squarespace platform.
Either you will have to import them manually or go for the automated import.
To import images automatically, you will need to install a plugin that can help you with Automatic upload of your images.
Once installed, this plugin can really become handy, but to work with it, you will have to edit all the pages and posts that have images.
In case of WordPress, you can edit multiple pages and posts together. So select all the posts (maximum 999 posts at a time) and click “Edit”.
When you update all of them with a single click on “Update” button, the plugin will be triggered and it will try to get the images from the external links and save it to your WordPress dashboard library.
Since at this point all the images have an external link to your old Squarespace, the images will be easily imported to your new website without any hassle.
If you have worked with different CMS platforms, you must have seen this issue with the URL.
Every single CMS, even WordPress, comes with a different URL structure.
In case you are starting a new blog, that should not be any issue to deal with but in case you are trying t migrate your site from Squarespace to WordPress, you will have to do a bit more to fix the URL links.
Since the URL structure for both the platforms is different and you wish to keep the structure in its older form, you need to edit the URL structure on your WordPress blog.
To do so go to Settings and then “Permalinks”; this will allow you to change the URL structure the way you want it.
In case after fixing the links, you still find 404 errors on your WordPress blog, try to resolve it manually and you are done.
